Communities are beginning to celebrate together again – face to face, in real time.

Following successful COVID-19 vaccination efforts led by Axis Health System and many other local agencies, many nonprofit organizations are carefully resuming live events and fundraisers across the region. Axis proudly supports communities across the five-county region of Southwest Colorado, and we are excited to participate in live events again. Our teams contribute by staffing tables, sharing information, offering prizes and fun activities for all ages, and supporting some events as sponsors.

“We are thrilled to connect in person again, after so many months of quarantine and video calls,” said Axis Health System Marketing Manager Karla Sluis. “Kids and adults love to spin our carnival-style prize wheel. We love to share our resources and programs. It’s a win-win!”

In late April and May, Axis teams stuffed event materials into their cars and drove many miles to visit communities across the region. They staffed tables at events in La Plata County and Montezuma County, and in late May they will participate in an Archuleta County event.

  • April 29, Cortez – School Community Youth Collaborative Resource Fair: Axis representatives from the Community Counseling Assistance Program (CCP) staffed a table to support youth and their families in Montezuma and Dolores counties. Resources included mental and physical health, food, housing, education and youth programming and opportunities. The spring carnival featured games, karaoke, food and giveaways at Southwest Open High School in Cortez. School Community Youth Collaborative’s mission is to support youth on their path to healthy adulthood.
  • May 1, Durango – Rocky Mountain PBS Kids Club Drive-In Tour: Axis was an underwriting sponsor of this statewide traveling event for a show held at the Durango Mall. Featuring new PBS Kids episodes from Daniel Tiger broadcast in English and Spanish on FM stations, families were safely socially distanced in their vehicles while sharing a memorable learning experience with their neighbors. Axis donated items for free SWAG bags for each family, including coloring books and toys. The bag includes resources for crisis care, COVID-19 vaccinations, mental health, dental health and primary care. The mission of Rocky Mountain PBS is to discover provocative and inspiring local, national and international programming; find diverse viewpoints; score front row center seats to world-class performances; and experience lifelong learning opportunities every month.
  • May 9, Cortez – Hospice of Montezuma 19th Annual Golf Tournament: Axis was a sponsor for the second year in a row of this event held at the Conquistador Golf Course. Teams enjoyed lunch, prizes and an 18-Hole Scramble. About $20,000 was raised for Hospice of Montezuma, which is the premier provider of end-of-life care, caregiver support and bereavement services for patients, families and the community.
  • May 22, Pagosa Springs – Rise Above Violence Mental Health Awareness Walk: Axis is a Gold Sponsor of this peace walk followed by a resource fair. Participants will walk from Town Park to Yamagucci Park. The Axis CCP staff will host a table, invite attendees to spin the popular prize wheel, and share information. The mission of Rise Above Violence is to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“These events are always so fun, and it’s such a great way for us to outreach to our communities,” said Sadie Prather, CCP Community Outreach Specialist. “Everyone is having fun and looking for ways to be healthier and more supported. Our team gets to be in the fun position of being that connector for people.”

Axis staff know the fun factor is key at live events. Attendees are challenged to ask a question about Axis or its services to earn a chance to spin the prize wheel. The prize wheel includes giveaways that encourage growth and activities, such as “grow your own pine tree” kits, frisbees, coloring books and sport bands.

“We meet people that we might not have otherwise been able to connect with,” said Prather. “The events feel so special when people share their excitement about the offerings Axis has, and they walk away with the information they need to get started as patients or to benefit from our community programs.”
