In the midst of a global pandemic, local agencies have come together to share their strengths. Axis Health System (AHS) is proud to be part of a team that has contributed to a total of 15,638 COVID-19 tests in the region. AHS staff conducted 1,017 of these tests to date.

In early June, AHS began providing their free community COVID-19 testing in Durango and Pagosa Springs and Dove Creek. At all sites, AHS staff were responsible for the operations of the testing site, logistics and supplies procurement, scheduling, testing, coordinating with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and notifying patients of results.

In late September, AHS partnered with San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH), Animas Surgical Hospital (ASH), the City of Durango, La Plata County and La Plata County Sheriff’s office to provide free diagnostic (PCR) COVID-19 testing five days a week. SJPBH handles operations of this testing site and provides all of the test kits and the majority of the PPE. AHS supports the testing site with staffing, supplies and logistics.

As of late September 2020, testing is available in Durango from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Durango Public Library overflow parking lot, located on the corner of East Third Avenue and 20th Street. AHS staff also continue to provide free testing in Pagosa Springs at Archuleta Integrated Healthcare on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Anyone is welcome to get tested. People do not need to have symptoms or exposure to COVID-19. Appointments are required. Call 970.264.2104.

Here’s a look at COVID-19 tests successfully completed by AHS and community partners and reported to the CDPHE as of Sept. 25, 2020:

  • 9,998 COVID-19 tests completed in La Plata County
  • 1,785 COVID-19 diagnostic (PCR) tests completed in Archuleta County
  • 3,855 antibody tests in La Plata and Archuleta counties
  • 1,017 COVID-19 tests completed by Axis Health System staff

“We hope that this additional testing capacity will help to provide clarity to those who are concerned about possible exposure or illness,” said Dr. Luke Casias, AHS Medical Director. “Testing will also help the community continue to refine the efforts on containing the spread of the virus. The increased testing data and tracking of positive results through our partnership with SJBPH will assist in keeping our communities safe.”
