Axis Health System warns patients of local telephone scams
September 20, 2017
Durango, CO: It has recently been reported to Axis Health System (AHS) that telephone scams asking for healthcare and other information may be occurring in our area. We want to make sure as many people as possible have information about these scams.
Recent reports to law enforcement indicate that telephone scam callers are representing themselves as employees of the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General, or the FBI, asking people to provide or update information. Questions that callers may ask include:
- Who is your primary care physician?
- Where do you receive your medical treatment?
- What insurance carrier do you have?
- Other personal information of various kinds
It is important to know that there may be times when Axis Health System (AHS) calls patients regarding their care. Here’s a way to confirm that it is in fact AHS calling, and not a telephone scam: When an AHS staff member calls a patient, the staff member will always identify who they are by providing his or her name, position within AHS and the reason for a call. If patients have any doubts about the validity of the call, they may request an AHS telephone number to call back. Then, to the call can be returned to verify that it is in fact AHS. There are a variety of reasons AHS front desk, providers or other administrative staff may call patients, such as: lab results, prescription requests, responding to voicemails, reminders, billing, referral or follow-up requests, and patient satisfaction questions.
Axis Health System is here to support patients and community members, and keep everyone informed of any developments. Please feel free to contact us with any questions at 970.259.2162, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
