About David S. Shaeffer, MD, MPH
Dr. David S. Shaeffer, MD, MPH, is a general surgeon at Axis Health System’s Pagosa Springs Integrated Healthcare, specializing in general surgery, endoscopy, and colonoscopy. He provides services such as abdominal wall hernia repair, laparoscopic gallbladder removal, and colon cancer screening and prevention. He also performs a wide range of office procedures for skin cancer and other non-cancerous skin conditions.
Dr. Shaeffer earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in 2004 and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii from 2004 to 2009. After residency, he earned a Master’s in Public Health, focusing on community-based colon cancer screening. He is Board Certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He has provided compassionate care to his Pagosa Springs patients since 2011.
In 2017, he and his wife, Dr. Amber Reiss‑Holt, founded Pagosa Medical Group, providing affordable, accessible urgent and primary care.
Dr. Shaeffer serves his community, both locally and nationally. He proudly serves in the United States Air Force Reserve as a General Surgeon and member of a critical care air transport team. He is also the medical director of the Archuleta County Public Health Department and the Upper San Juan Search and Rescue Team.
