What is respite care?

Respite is a short-term, voluntary service that provides a safe, neutral setting—or flexible in-home support—so individuals can step back from a stressful situation, regain balance, and return to daily life with stronger coping skills and supports. Care is person‑centered and focused on stabilization, recovery, and connection to community resources.
“Respite care gives individuals the chance to step out of a stressful situation, regain balance, and return to daily life with stronger support.” — Axis Regional Crisis Center

Discover Our Mental Health Services Approach
Our mental health services recognize the differences between mental health and behavioral health, each requiring unique approaches to care and treatment. Understanding these differences is key to our approach in providing you with the right support.
Mental Health
- Refers to a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
- It affects how individuals think, feel, and behave in daily life.
- Mental health includes conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mood or cognitive disorders.
- It focuses primarily on cognitive and emotional states.

Behavioral Health
- Refers to the connection between behaviors and the health and well-being of the body and mind.
- It encompasses mental health issues as well as substance use disorders, eating disorders, and other behaviors that impact well-being.
- Behavioral health addresses both the physical (e.g., addiction, sleep disorders) and emotional/mental aspects of a person’s health.
- It often focuses on changing unhealthy behaviors through therapy or treatment.
